"Simeon is a twelve-year-old boy who I met a couple of years ago when he and his queer family arrived from Russia to Vienna escaping the totality regime of Vladimir Putin. He has three parents, two of who are non-binary people, and lives with them in a shared house project. Growing up in a queer environment, Simeon is trying out many things and social roles forbidden for so many children. When I met this special kid for the very first time he was wearing a pink tutu ballet skirt with mohawk hairstyle. Now he has green hair and a chicken named Klara. Zuhause – Entwurzelung, Verbindung, Zugehörigkeit

Zuhause - mit den einfachsten Wörtern beschrieben - ist ein Ort, an dem eine_r sich wohl fühlt und ein Grundgefühl der Geborgenheit entwickelt. Es kann ein Ort sein, an dem eine_r aufgewachsen ist. An dem Menschen, Freund_innen, Bekannte, Familie leben, die einem_r wichtig sind. Gerüche, Landschaft, Essen und Sprache sind auch Teil davon, ein Gefühl von Zuhause zu empfinden. Mit denen verbindet eine_r auch etwas emotionales. Auch die ersten Geschichten von einem_r sind dort entstanden und die Gefühle zur räumlichen und sozialen Sicherheit wurden erst dort erkannt. Zuhause ist ein vertrauter Ort.

Aber ist ein erstes Zuhause für immer? Unterschiedliche Lebensumstände bringen eine_r von einem Ort zu einem anderen. Sehnsucht nach dem verlassen Ort, nach dem ersten Zuhause kann manchmal stark oder schwach, manchmal präsent sein oder doch vergessen. Womit hängt es zusammen, ein neues Zuhause vorzufinden? Welche sozialen und ökonomischen Umstände ermöglichen oder hindern Menschen daran, sich in den migrierten oder geflüchteten Ort zuhause zu fühlen? Inwiefern kann Sich-zuhause-fühlen oder nicht fühlen als eine Art von Differenzmarkierung, im Diskurse der Konstruktion des Anderen, gesehen werden?

Diaspora, Expat und Exil... Auch wenn das verschiedene Begriffe sind oder es davon mehrere Auslegungen gibt, handelt es sich hier um geografische Entwurzelungen, die mit emotionalen Zuständen einhergehen die ebenso mit Fragen von Identität und Zugehörigkeit in Verbindung stehen. Welche Rolle spielt Community für die Entwicklung vom Gefühl eines Zuhauses und eine neue emotionale Verbundenheit?

Home – Uprooting, Connecting, Belonging

Home - described with the simplest words - is a place where one feels comfortable and develops a basic feeling of security. It can be a place where one grew up. It can be a place where people, friends, acquaintances, family members who are important to you live. Smells, landscape, food and language are also part of feeling a sense of home. With them one also connects something emotional. Also the first stories of oneself were created there and the feelings of spatial and social security were first recognized there. Home is a familiar place.

But is a first home forever? Different life circumstances bring oneself from one place to another. Longing for the place one left, for the first home can be sometimes strong or weak, sometimes present or forgotten. What is the connection to finding a new home? What social and economic circumstances enable or prevent people from feeling at home in the place one migrated or fled to? To what extent can feeling at home or not feeling at home be seen as a way of marking difference, in the discourse of constructing the Other?

Diaspora, expat and exile… Even if these are different terms or there are several interpretations of them, they signify geographical uprootings accompanied by emotional states that are equally related to questions of identity and belonging. What role does community play in the development of a sense of home and a new emotional connection?
